What is the secret to a happy and healthy life? According to Dr. Robert Waldinger, leader of the longest study on adult life, the answer is not wealth or fame, but warm personal relationships. "The Harvard Study of Adult Development" emphasizes the importance of good relationships for both mental and physical health.

In 1938, Harvard Medical School began following 724 men, systematically examining their physical and emotional well-being. Subsequently, these men's spouses and children were also included in the study. The conclusion is as follows: 

  • People who have secure and close relationships are more likely to experience a sense of joy and better mental and physical health than those who feel they have too few close and warm relationships. 
  • People who have secure and close relationships live longer. 

The simple explanation, according to Waldinger, is that when we have close and secure relationships, we can talk about the things that fill or pressure us in our lives. When we feel seen and heard in a safe relationship, we can let our guard down, and return to a natural state of balance.
