What is the secret to a happy and healthy life? According to Dr. Robert Waldinger, leader of the longest study on adult life, the answer is not wealth or fame, but warm personal relationships. "The Harvard Study of Adult Development emphasizes the importance of good relationships for both mental and physical health.

In 1938, Harvard Medical School began following 724 men, systematically examining their physical and emotional well-being. Later, the spouses and children of these men were also included in the study. The conclusion is the following: 

  • People who have safe and close relationships are more likely to experience a sense of happiness and mental and physical health than those who feel they have too few close and warm relationships. 
  • People who have safe and close relationships live longer. 

The simple explanation, according to Waldinger, is that when we have close and safe relationships, we can talk about the things that fill or pressure us in our lives. When we feel seen and heard in a safe relationship, our mental alertness is reduced and we fall back into a natural equilibrium and balance.
